Melissa Knieriem, DVM, DACVECC
Dr. Melissa Knieriem, a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, has notable experience and training in the veterinary field. Born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, Dr. Knieriem attended the University of Delaware as an undergraduate. Pursuing her passion for animal healthcare, she continued her education at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine where she earned her degree in 2000. Following graduation, Dr. Knieriem was selected for an internship in internal medicine and surgery at Coral Springs Animal Hospital where she started a residency program and continued to practice until 2004. Prior to joining the team at Calusa in 2007, Dr. Knieriem worked at an Animal Emergency and Referral Center in Fort Pierce, Florida. During this time, she also completed the process of board certification following examinations and a journal publication. From 2009-2015, Dr. Knieriem practiced with the Pet Specialists (formerly Southeast Veterinary Referral Center) at the Animal Cancer Care Clinic before recently rejoining the team at Calusa.
Her training is truly impressive as she specializes in complex cases such as, but not limited to, kidney failure, liver disease, endocrine disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, blood disorders, respiratory disorders and infectious diseases. Highly skilled, with experience ranging across the United States- and even Canada- Dr. Knieriem treats patients with acute emergencies, transfers to intensive care and by appointment for chronic conditions. Some examples of chronic conditions include: renal failure, inflammatory bowel disease, blood disorders, liver disease, pancreatitis, asthma or bronchitis, difficult to regulate diabetics and Cushing’s disease. Often times, she is sought out to assist patients with multiple diseases in finding a balance with their conditions.
When she is not treating animals, Dr. Knieriem enjoys relaxing on the beach, yoga, cooking, gardening and spending time with her family. At home, she is a loving wife and mother of two children, two canines- Molly and Princess- and one feline, Timmay.
