Veterinarians

Andrew Turkell, DVM, CVA, CCRT
Owner & Partner, General Practice

After graduating from Araneta University in the Philippines in 1979, Dr. Andrew Turkell chose South Florida as the place where he wanted to live and practice. He acquired Lake Worth Animal Hospital in 1980, where he practiced for over 20 years.

Realizing the need for high quality/high touch veterinary medicine in other locales, Dr. Turkell opened Boynton Beach Animal Hospital in 1985, followed by Calusa Animal Hospital in Boca Raton in 1990 and Island Animal Hospital in Palm Beach in 1995.

In September 2006, Dr. Turkell realized his 25-year dream by opening the Calusa Veterinary Center, a state-of-the-art facility that marks a move and expansion from the former Calusa Animal Hospital, which enjoyed 16 years of continuous growth.

Dr. Turkell is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society and the prestigious American Animal Hospital Association, Council of 100. He has a special interest in internal medicine, dermatology, exotic animal care and holistic pet health.

Dr. Turkell’s growing interest in holistic and complementary medicine led him to return to class and acquire certification as a veterinary acupuncturist with a side interest in Tui Na, a type of Eastern massage. He has also recently completed course study leading to certification in veterinary rehabilitation.

Dr. Turkell was the host of the WPBR radio show “Pet Talk” and was the co-producer of the feature-length documentary “Why Do They Treat Them Like Animals?,” a film by Jane Louder.

Dr. Turkell lives in Delray Beach with his wife Penny, an interior designer, whom he credits with making the CVC the beautiful, modern and warm place that it is. Also residing at their Delray Beach home is Charlie Bunny, a red-headed, fun-loving Poodle, who took over son Jaret’s room after he moved to Miami to practice law, a silver red fox, two very large iguanas that live in the palm trees and all the other creatures that make living in old Delray Beach what Dr. Turkell calls “a wonderful nature trip.”

Anthony Krawitz, DVM, CVH
Owner & Partner, General Practice, Homeopath

Dr. Anthony Krawitz graduated from the University of Pretoria, Onderstepoort, South Africa, in 1983 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science Degree. He worked in several multiple-doctor practices before building his own hospital in South Africa. Doctor Krawitz earned his Florida license in 1986, and moved to Florida in 1993 where he joined Calusa Animal Hospital, becoming a partner in 1995. Together with Dr Turkell, they realized their dream and built Calusa Veterinary Center, a state-of –the –art facility which opened its doors in September 2006.

Dr. Krawitz boasts broad experience in all aspects of veterinary medicine, including internal medicine and general surgery, and is well- known for his “bikini-cut” spay technique, which got its name due to the small incision he makes.

In the late 1980s, Dr. Krawitz became interested in homeopathy as an alternative way of practicing medicine, which led him to study homeopathy. In 1997, he became a certified veterinary homeopath after completing the professional course in veterinary homeopathy given by Dr. Richard Pitcairn, founder of the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy. Dr. Krawitz practices classical homeopathy and serves as a member of the homeopathic certification committee of the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy, a body that certifies veterinarians who have fulfilled professional homeopathy studies.

Dr. Krawitz lives in Delray Beach with his wife Jeanette, their animal-loving daughters Shannon and Ashton, doggy Pavel, and bird Petey. Dr. Krawitz is a sports fanatic and is an avid Miami Dolphins fan.

Cindy Krane, DVM
Associate, General Practice

Dr. Cindy Krane grew up in Montreal, Canada where she graduated from McGill University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Her sincere love for animals took her to Purdue University where she graduated with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1994 and included externships at the Baltimore aquarium and Washington, DC National Zoo.

Dr. Krane began her career working in large multi-doctor hospitals in Northern Virginia and Maryland. In 2003, Dr. Krane and her family moved to South Florida. Dr. Krane joined Calusa’s new state-of–the–art facility when it opened in 2006 and believes she has found the perfect place to provide informed, compassionate, quality health care to every patient she sees.

Dr. Krane lives in Boca Raton with her husband Steven and is a very active and involved mother to her children Lexie and Ryan. The Krane family enjoys spending time with their dog Chalupa (Chihuahua), 5 cats, 2 hermit crabs, chameleon, frog and frequent rescue animal-du-jour from the hospital.

Kera Sinclair, DVM
Associate, General Practice

Dr. Sinclair attended Michigan State University for her undergraduate studies and obtained a degree in Biology and Education. After graduation she taught 8th and 10th grade biology for one year before attending veterinary school. In 2006 Dr. Sinclair graduated from Michigan State University again this time with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. Before moving to Florida she spent two month treating exotic and domestic animals such as monkey and elephants in India. Dr. Sinclair has worked with a number of volunteer organizations such as the Animal Cruelty Society in downtown Chicago. Dr. Sinclair has been a part of the Calusa Veterinary Center team since January of 2002. She spent three years as an emergency veterinarian before starting to work as a general practice clinician. In her free time she enjoys photography, scrapbooking, watching college basketball and spending time with her family. Dr. Sinclair and her husband Mark married in 2007 in Key Large and had a beautiful son in 2009. The family also enjoys spending time with their two dogs Izzy a terrier mix and Stella a cockapoo.

Javier Fuentes, DVM
Associate, General Practice

Dr. Javier M. Fuentes is originally from Colombia. He attended La Salle University in Bogota, where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1992. After graduation, he completed a one year internship in different veterinary specialties in the Colombian Amazon. There he worked mainly with the local community with their small animals and exotic pets. He also worked with large and wild animals and pursued his interest in animal reproduction and surgery.

Upon completion of his internship, Dr. Fuentes spent the next two years earning his MBA. These stepping stones of experience and education helped pave the way in establishing his own veterinary hospital in Bogota with his wife Ana, also a veterinarian. Both of them began diving in, eager to work hand in hand in the fascinating world of small animal medicine.

Concurrently, over the next few years, Dr. Fuentes embarked on another special interest which entailed pursuing his dream of reentering academia pursuing a Master of Science in Parasitology and then earned his PhD in the same area. He then went on to become an associate professor in La Salle University, teaching the up and coming classes of veterinarians.

Dr. Fuentes and Ana later decided to move to south Florida searching for a more peaceful, tranquil environment to raise a family. They have two beautiful children, Nicholas and Emily, who share their parents’ love of animals. There are early signs they may be following in their parents’ footsteps. The Fuentes family shares their lives with feline Jeanne Marie, three dogs, Miley, Morgan and Charlie and tropical fish.

Dr. Fuentes has dedicated the last 10 years obtaining special training and a professional interest in small animal dentistry, surgery and exotic animal medicine. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Dental Society and the American Heartworm Association.

In his spare time, he spends a great deal of time with family activities and enjoys volunteering at the Sawgrass Nature Center repairing the shells of injured turtles and tortoises, practicing exotic avian and all other wildlife creatures medicine.

Maria Yanguas, DVM
Associate, General Practice

Kristen Kline, DVM
Associate, General Practice

Dr. Kristen Kline hails originally from sunny California where she completed her degree in Biopsychology at UC Santa Barbara. She then attended Virginia Tech where she earned a Master’s degree in equine nutrition and exercise physiology in 1996 and a DVM in 2000. After vet school Dr. Kline completed a fellowship in equine cardiology and ultrasound at the University of Pennsylvania, and went on to an equine ambulatory residency at Virginia Tech. Another cross-country move landed her family in Pullman, Washington where her husband Dr. Dave Spranklin, also a veterinarian, completed his surgery residency at Washington State University. During this time Dr. Kline practiced both equine and small animal medicine at a very busy practice in Moscow, Idaho. Yearning for some warm weather Dr. Kline and her family - which at that time included 4 dogs, 3 cats, 2 horses, and 1 toddler – picked up and moved back across the country to Florida in 2006. She worked in small animal practice in Coral Springs for several years before coming to Calusa.

Dr. Kline has owned several Border Collies and showed extensively in agility and flyball, even competing in the Purina National Dog Challenge with her dog Jalen and earning an Onyx award. She loves to horseback ride in her spare time and she has 2 beautiful boys, Chase and Mitchell, who keep her very happy (and make sure she has very little spare time). Dr. Kline is thrilled to join the staff at Calusa!
